Student teaching, classes, and allergies. Oh My!

I know the title of this is very corney, but hey I have been student teaching all day and now I'm sitting in a boring class.

It has been a couple of weeks, eventful weeks might I add, since I last posted on my blog. Since my last posting I took over for half the day for a week, then on to three quarters of a day at a time for a week, and finally starting monday I get to be the lone teacher full time until December. I am very excited about this, it will be a bunch of work but I can't wait to get going on it. I have been doing alot of planning with my teacher to get ready for my taking over, so it should go smooth.

My worksample is going pretty well, I am teaching a science on trees. We have been learning how to identify different trees using a dichotomous keys. I have to admit that I was very nervous at first because I wasn't sure whether or not they would understand how to use a dichotomous key or not, but they did. We are now moving onto life cycles of trees and then how we use trees in our everyday lives. Part of our unit is planting a tree on school grounds. I got my parents to donate a Cedar tree for us, and some local nurseries to donate trees for other classes doing the same unit.

A funny story from my science unit today. We were identifying deciduous trees with a dichotomous key. One of my girls started to complain that her cheeks and face were itching and that she had a headache. I had her sit down, and try getting some water and also put some damp paper towels on her face to help the itching. Well, none of that helped at all. She then got a stomache and chest ache. Finally she got to the nurses office and went home with a pretty bad allergic reaction to the trees. I have worked in outdoor school settings and with kids and trees and I have NEVER seen anything like that. So I'm hoping that she is alright and nothing serious was wrong.

So, right now I am writing to you all who are reading this from my ever so fun class, Intro to Behavior Disorder. I say this with sarcasm because I am bored and my professor isn't very good at lecturing. I am doing some homework, and doing some fun work.

Well that is all for now, after I take over full time I will write more with some funny stories, student quotes and random thoughts.

Here we go!!

So I have taken over half time teaching in the class. Next week I am taking over for most of the day and finally in a week and a half I will tak over full time. I am having a great time so far, really really busy with teaching, planning and writing lesson plans.

I have started teaching my unit on trees: their life cycles, how to identify them and their uses. It is going really well so far, we just started but my students are really into it. I have had three trees donated by my parents and local nurseries for my class, and two other third grade classes to plant as a part of our unit, I am very excited.

Well I am in class and need to get going, just wanted to post a quick update. I'll update again when I am full time teaching.

It's official

So it's official. I am officially a student teacher now that the term has started. The only thing different now is that I am there 40+ hours a week instead of 30+ hours. I am excited, and a little nervous, but hey what can you do. I am doing some planning on my unit today with some of the other teachers who are doing a joint unit with my teacher and I, so that should be exciting. The only thing I am not looking forward to is having class from 5 - 9pm after student teaching all day on Wed.

Oh yeah, for those of you who know my roomate Bryan, he is engaged to get married to his girlfriend. I think the wedding is scheduled on August 20th for now.

Well it is 6:43 in the AM and I have a few things to do before my carpool gets here. I love having a carpool because now I only have to drive every third week instead of every stinking day out to Junction City (which is like 35 miles round trip).

First Sick Day

I'm SO glad that I haven't officially started my student teaching assingment. I had to call in sick this morning, which isn't as easy when you have to be there 40 hours a week. Luckily I am just a volunteer for the moment and it was easy to deal with. I am not the only one who is already sick, one of my good friends got the flu from her 1st graders and my brothers friend also go the flu from her kiddos. Here's hoping that I don't get sick once the term starts. Germs suck.

Finally an Update

Well I have been super busy the past couple of weeks with being in my student teaching classroom in the mornings and working in the afternoons. I finally have some free time to post an update on here.

I have 18 students in my class, and they are all pretty well behaved. They finally started coming out of their shells recently so it isn't so quiet in class. Right now I am doing alot of observation and doing just a few things with the kids. I generally read the snack time story and run part of the reading groups. I am excited for UO to start so that I can get into teaching things. My teacher and I, along with two other teachers, have been talking about doing a multi-class science unit on Forestry. This is cool because they want me to plan part of it which will cover my worksample. Well that is all for now, time to go do things, my brother is in town for the weekend. Much more once I start school.

Last long weekend for a while

So I came to the realization today that this was the last long weekend, or weekend for that matter, that I will have for a while. Once I start student teaching I will be either sleeping or doing homework on the weekends and will not have much time to go do many things, but oh well.

Well, things went well in my student teaching placemtent last week. I went to a couple of meetings and helped my teacher get her classroom ready. On Tuesday some of the students will be coming to drop off some school supplies so I will get to meet some of them. On Wednesday, I get to meet all 18 of my 3rd graders on the first day of school. I am excited because it will be fun to get to know my class and to get back into the swing of things. I don't start school for 3 more weeks, but time will fly and before I know it school will start and then it will be the end of Fall term. More posts as I get going on my student teaching, I will probably post on Thursday about the first day of school.
